If you’ve been exploring hemp products lately, chances are you’ve come across THCA—specifically in concentrates, flower, vapes, etc. But what exactly is it, and why is everyone talking about it? Let’s break it down.

What is THCA?

THCA stands for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which is a NON-psychoactive cannabinoid found in raw and live cannabis plants.

An easier way to describe it would be by calling it a precursor to THC (the compound responsible for the high you feel when you consume cannabis). THCA is found in freshly harvested cannabis and hasn’t yet been activated by heat.

When you smoke or vape hemp, you’re applying heat, which triggers a process called decarboxylation. This converts THCA into THC, unlocking its psychoactive effects.

Does THCA Get You High?

Short answer: No, at least, not by itself.

THCA doesn’t get you high in its raw form. It only becomes psychoactive once it’s decarboxylated—usually by heat (which then converts to THC). That’s why people can juice raw cannabis or consume THCA tinctures without the feeling of being “stoned.”

Is THCA Legal?

The best way to find out if THCA is legal in your area is through proper research. It’s always important to check your state’s hemp laws, especially if you’re buying online or across state lines. Many states have passed or are currently trying to pass legislation that can strictly limit many hemp and cannabis products based on serving sizes, packaging, and even banning potential ways of consuming.

THCA Edibles: Steer Clear

With the amount of hemp products and alternative cannabinoids flooding the market, keeping up with all of this knowledge can be overwhelming. Many companies are banking on their customers not fully understanding what these molecules do or how they work. 

While companies can say their edibles have THCA, a majority of the time, this is simply a marketing tactic to get uneducated consumers to buy their product. Remember how we talked about THCA needing heat to be converted into THC? This doesn’t happen with a majority of edible products on the market that are labeled as having THCA. 

Most of these edibles are merely Delta-8 or Delta-9, with THCA slapped on the container. While companies can put raw THCA in their edibles and the packaging is technically true, they still need a high amount of heat to decarb (more specifically, 220-250 degrees fahrenheit!) If you were to try and decarb the raw material in an edible, it would melt, destroy the flavor/texture, and you would ultimately end up with an unusable product. 

This is why it is always extremely important to not only read lab reports from companies, but also understand what you are reading. Proper insights can give customers better knowledge on what they are buying and ingesting.
